I'm pondering getting away from my traditional "Martin-style" headstock...does anyone know where there are examples all in one place that I can modify/meld/toy with to come up with something? I don't feel right about copying something exactly....TIA. |

Larry, you might try doing a google picture search with a keyword of headstock. I tried that and came up with a few usable examples. |

I filled up a couple dozen pages in a sketchbook before I hit on mine. It helped a lot when I started thinking in three dimensions instead of just two. I like the google idea, though. Work smarter, not harder. Best, Michael |

Yeah, even though google had a few hits I still wound up just sitting down with a piece of parer and a pencil to actually get something done. |

Hi Larry, Heres a bunch of peghead shapes that I copied off various internet sites because I liked them & wanted to use them as inspiration only - NOT TO DIRECTLY COPY THEM. With that use in mind I feel it's maybe OK to post them here for you without the permission of the various webmasters. If anyone objects I'll ask Lance or Brock to delete the post. Fair enough? Awesome Skip!  Yes, the Martin style, tho easy, is very tired with me...I hope to come up with something interesting, but I'm afraid Solomon was spot on with that "there's nothing new under the sun" bit....  . Thanks for the post!

Skip, that's a great selection of examples. As far as headstocks for flattops go -- I really like Brock Polling's headstock shape design. I recently re-designed my headstock shape doing what Skip has done and then altering the top to taste -- sure saves a bunch of time. I gather Martin Guitars doesn't mind people using their headstock shape? Good old Gibson would likely sue you if you borrowed the "mustache" shape of the top of theirs. |

Michael, a lot of folks use a variation of the "moustache" shape, I was suggesting Gibson would have something to say if you used precisely their "moustache" shape. |

One of you mathematical types should figure the number of possible headstock shapes and post it here!  Bet that'd take up a lotta bandwidth!

Paul, It was from a Japanese or Japanese/American luthier's website. It wasn't Shimo but I can't recall the actual name. Sorry to be of so little help. I agree though, it's really lovely ... this one probably couldn't be improved on much. Skip |
